You’re Not Being Very Inclusive, Jesus

Brian opened by asking the congregation why Jesus would be canceled today for saying “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” People in the park offered answers, naming things like the “all roads lead to God” idea, the belief that being a good person is enough, and the argument that there is no God at all. Brian let those answers set up the central tension he wanted to work through: how can Jesus be exclusive and still be good news?
What was said
Brian started by naming what Jesus is actually claiming. Every religion other than Christianity involves humanity climbing its own way toward God, which Brian said is impossible anyway. Jesus is not saying all roads lead to God, and he is not saying God does not exist. He is saying God exists and there is one specific way to have right standing with him. That claim is the reason he was canceled in his day, and Brian said he would be canceled just as fast today.
The sharpest edge of the sermon was an analogy about the IRS. The IRS knows exactly what you owe but makes you figure it out yourself. Brian said God is nothing like that. Jesus does not just tell us we are not good enough and leave us there. He tells us exactly how to get to the father. The exclusivity of the statement is inseparable from the clarity of the invitation.
Brian then worked through Ephesians chapter two starting in verse four, reading Paul’s words about being made alive in Christ even while dead in transgressions, saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast. He kept pausing to ask the congregation whether each phrase was inclusive or exclusive. His point was that the mechanism of salvation is radically inclusive: God did the hard work, the gift is not earned, and no one is disqualified by their past.
He moved to Romans chapter ten, verses nine through thirteen, and ran the same exercise. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” is as wide open as language allows. But there is only one name. Inclusive in scope, exclusive in means. Brian said those two things are not in contradiction.
He closed the argument with James chapter four verse six, which he attributed to James, the brother of Jesus: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” He described pride as a door that stays locked and humility as the key that opens it. On the outside of the door, it reads “very exclusive.” On the inside, it reads “all are welcome.” That image is where Brian said he had preached himself to the end of the message and stopped.
Before closing the service, Brian also noted that Tribe will be receiving a special offering the following week for a group of Israeli reservists, men and women pulled back from civilian life to fight in Northern Israel, who are stopping in Jackson Hole for rest and time with believers through a ministry called Risen Hearts before returning home.

- Brian closed with James 4:6, saying humility is the key that unlocks the doors of God’s grace, and that on the inside of those doors it says all are welcome. Where in your life right now is pride making it harder to walk through that door?
