Tribe spent Christmas Eve outside, on Town Square, and the message matched the setting. Short, plain, and aimed at whoever happened to be standing there.
The story of Christmas begins all the way back in a garden. That was the opening line and the whole frame. Not a manger, not a census, a garden and a promise made the moment things went wrong, that one born of a woman would crush the head of the serpent.
From there to the long wait. Like a woman in labour, the chosen people of Israel travailed for the arrival of the one who had been promised. Centuries of it. The point of telling it that way on a cold night in December is that the birth everyone sings about is the end of a very long ache, not a charming beginning.
And then the verse most people can quote and fewer have heard aimed at them. God so loved the world. Brian put the word you inside the sentence where it belongs, which is the only way that verse has ever done anything to anybody.
