Coming off the two-week holiness series, Brian picked up a single line buried in Israel’s victory song after the Red Sea: “Who is like you, glorious in holiness?” Scripture describes a real spiritual reality where God had, in ages past, delegated authority over the nations to lesser spiritual powers, the “little g gods” of the divine council. Those powers failed by doing exactly what you’d expect: they let worship get directed at themselves instead of pointing back to the one true God.

To make the incomparability land, Brian pulled up a stats chart of the best soccer players in the world: goals plus assists per ninety minutes, plotted as a bell curve. Almost everyone clusters near the average. The true superstars, Haaland, Mbappe, Ronaldo, sit three or four standard deviations out. Then there’s Messi: nearly six standard deviations away, off the chart completely alone, with nobody else close. That’s the picture Exodus 15 is painting, God isn’t the best among rivals. He’s not on the same chart at all.

The turn Brian wanted people to sit with: a being this incomparable should be utterly unreachable, the way you could never actually get near Messi no matter how much money you had. Instead, the God who calls every star in the universe by name also knows the number of hairs on your head and knew every day of your life before you lived a single one: and he wants to draw close to you personally, not just be admired from a distance.

2. Where in your life has something less than God ended up getting the “worship” (the attention, trust, or devotion) that belongs to him?
3. What would it look like this week to actually pause and consider how incomparable God is, rather than rushing past it?
4. God knowing the smallest details of your life is meant to draw you close, not just impress you. Does it?
