A rare thematic detour from the “Unbreakable” series for Valentine’s weekend, titled “God in Search of Man.” Brian took the room back to Genesis 3, right after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, realize they’re exposed, and hide. Instead of moving quickly past it, he slowed down on one detail: God’s question to Adam, “where are you?”
Brian ran a simple exercise that became the heart of the message, he asked the room to imagine the tone of voice behind that question. Some heard it as a booming, commanding voice, like an angry parent catching a child red-handed. Others heard something closer to heartbroken, even gently playful, the voice of someone who already knows the answer but is giving the other person a chance to come out of hiding. Brian’s point: our mental image of God shapes how we read every page of Scripture, and this scene is really a love story, not a courtroom: God pursuing people who are hiding from him, before any punishment enters the picture at all.
That reframing was the Valentine’s Day connection: real love pursues, even into places of shame and hiding, and the Bible’s bigger story is God in search of man, not man having to somehow find his way back to God on his own.
