In week two of the Leviticus series, Brian pushed back on the instinct to treat books like Leviticus as outdated filler, insisting every detail is there on purpose and has something to say to the church today. He read through Leviticus 9, where Aaron completed the first sacrifices as newly ordained priest, blessed the people, and fire fell from the Lord’s presence to consume the offering on the altar: a moment of overwhelming, visible glory that sent the whole congregation to their faces in worship.
Just verses later, that same glory turns dark: Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s own sons and brand-new priests, brought “unauthorized fire” into the tent of meeting and were struck dead instantly by fire from the Lord. Brian let the congregation sit with the discomfort of the question (why would God do that to men he’d just ordained?) before landing on the idea that God’s holiness isn’t negotiable even for those closest to him. Drawing on Luke 12:47-48, one member connected the moment to the principle that more is required of those who have been given much, and Brian applied that directly to believers now described as “kings and priests” through Christ, carrying real responsibility, not just privilege.
Rather than resolving the tension neatly, Brian left the church to wrestle honestly with a God who is both a source of overwhelming blessing and an uncompromising consuming fire, setting up the following week’s teaching on the sin offering and what it cost to make peace with that kind of holiness.

- The same fire that blessed Israel also killed Nadab and Abihu for “unauthorized fire.” Does the idea of an uncompromising, holy God unsettle you, comfort you, or both?
- Luke 12:48 says more is required of those given much. As someone described as a “king and priest” in Christ, where do you sense God asking more of you?
