The Sunday after the Fourth, Brian borrowed the national anthem’s language for a conversation about a freedom that goes deeper than any holiday: “Land of the Free, Home of the Brave,” out of Galatians 5. Paul spends the whole book contrasting two ways of relating to God: trying to earn right standing by keeping the law perfectly, or receiving a relationship with Jesus as a gift. Galatians 5 is where that argument peaks.
Brian pushed the room past a tidy definition of freedom into something more specific: freedom isn’t just “living in faith and love,” it’s no longer trying to earn what Jesus has already given you. The law was never the enemy (it was God’s good instructions for relationship with him) but nobody, starting with Israel at the base of Mount Sinai, has ever managed to keep it. Swap “the law” for “sin” in your head, Brian suggested, and slavery to it becomes obvious: it’s rebellion against God, and most people don’t even realize they’re living under it until they’re getting close to actually being free.
The “home of the brave” half of the message turned personal: real freedom takes courage, because it means dropping the pride, the scheming, and the constant self-checking, and just being honest with God the way Peter finally was on the shore with Jesus, “you know I love you.” Brian’s picture for it was collapsing in a puddle at Jesus’s feet: letting go of trying to manage everything yourself and just telling God the truth.
