Guest teacher Justin picked up the church’s ongoing series through Leviticus for its sixth week, titling the message “Levi, Leviticus, and Us.” After walking the congregation back through the series so far (Leviticus as a blueprint for holiness, the reality that blood was never about appeasing an angry God, and the peace offering as a picture of testimony and fellowship) he turned to the tribe of Levi and, specifically, the priestly line of Aaron who carried out the sacrifices the church had been studying.
Reading Malachi 3, Justin showed how God describes the ideal Levite: someone who walked with him in peace and uprightness, and who turned many away from sin. But Malachi also pictures God as a refiner’s fire, purifying the sons of Levi like silver and gold until a refiner can see his own reflection in the metal. Justin connected that image forward to Hebrews and 2 Corinthians 3, where Moses had to veil his face after meeting with God, but believers under the new covenant now behold that same glory with unveiled faces and are gradually transformed into Christ’s likeness, degree by degree.
From there Justin brought the priesthood theme to the whole church: 1 Peter 2 calls every believer part of a “royal priesthood,” a title only the sons of Aaron carried under the old covenant. Because Jesus tore the veil separating people from God, that access and identity now belong to everyone in Christ, not a single family line. He closed by returning to Hebrews 12’s picture of running the race with endurance, eyes fixed on Jesus, as the practical shape of what it looks like to live as a purified, royal priesthood today.
