Continuing a series on identity, Brian moved the conversation to what he called “branding ourselves”, how a person is marked and identified. He walked through Ephesians 1:3-14, slowing down at verses 13 and 14 to unpack the idea that believing in Christ means being sealed with the Holy Spirit, a guarantee written into a person’s life the way a name gets written on a tag or a brand gets stamped on a boot. That seal, Brian said, isn’t decoration; it’s God’s own signature promising the inheritance still to come, and it exists so that God is praised and glorified, not so a person is left to alter or dim their own identity.

Brian contrasted that God-given identity with the enemy’s counterfeit strategies, drawing a comparison to the way drugs and other counterfeits alter a person’s consciousness rather than clarify it. He then turned briefly to Galatians, naming the “works of the flesh” (envy, jealousy, wrath, among others) as the obvious counterfeit fruit set against the fruit of the Spirit. To sort out what in a person’s life is truly Spirit-led versus what’s leftover “flesh,” Brian offered Psalm 139:23-24 as a bold, honest prayer: search my heart, examine my life, point out anything not of you, and lead me in the way of everlasting life.

The practical takeaway was that sorting out identity isn’t primarily an intellectual exercise but a relationship, inviting the Holy Spirit to search and lead rather than trying to self-diagnose which parts of a person’s life are truly transformed.
