The How of Holiness

Part 2 of 2 in Called to Holiness

Parte 2 de 2 de la serie Called to Holiness

Brian Hunter · July 26, 2026

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Recap

Part two of the holiness conversation that started the week before with Called to Holiness. If last week was about what holiness means (set apart, dedicated to a specific purpose) this week was about how you actually walk it out without turning it into exhausting self-improvement.

Brian went back to the illustration from the week before: making something holy just means separating it out and dedicating it to a purpose. That part is settled. The harder question is what happens next: are you chasing holiness by trying to be a good person to earn God’s favor, white-knuckling your way through good behavior? Or is there another way?

That’s where Matthew 11 comes in. Jesus doesn’t respond to “how do I become holy” with a longer to-do list: he says come to me, take my yoke, and you’ll find rest. The weight people carry trying to make up for their own failures, or trying to keep every rule perfectly, is exactly the burden Jesus says he came to lift. Holiness isn’t heavier religious effort. It’s walking in step with Jesus, yoked to him, which he says is actually the light way to carry it.

Touch Points

  1. Does pursuing holiness feel more like exhausting effort or like resting in a relationship right now?
  2. Where are you carrying a weight (guilt, performance, religious obligation) that Jesus is offering to take?
  3. What would it look like this week to be “yoked” to Jesus in something specific, instead of trying to handle it solo?
  4. Looking back at both “Called to Holiness” and this message, what’s one concrete way you want to walk this out?
