Brian opened Revelation 22:12, where Jesus promises to bring a reward with him at his return, based on each person’s deeds. He immediately raised the obvious question: what actually is this reward? Not salvation, Brian was careful to clarify, that’s a free gift already secured through faith. This reward is something given on top of salvation, tied to Psalm 139’s picture of every deed being recorded, and Brian suggested it centers on deepened proximity and relationship with Jesus rather than a material prize to unwrap.

To flesh that out, Brian turned to Luke 19’s parable of the minas, where a king rewards a faithful servant’s stewardship of a small amount by putting him in charge of ten cities. He connected this to 1 Corinthians’s teaching that each person’s work will be tested by fire, with what survives becoming the basis of reward. Brian’s point was that reward in Scripture is consistently pictured as increased responsibility and closeness with God, in proportion to how faithfully someone stewarded what they were already given, however small it seemed.

The message closed with a call to view present faithfulness, even in unglamorous or hidden ways, as directly shaping a future reward that Brian described as far more relational than material.
