Recap

The wrap-up week of “Work Smarter, Not Harder” closed the Gideon series with one last stop in Judges 8:28: the note that after Gideon’s victory, Midian never raised its head again, and the land had peace for forty years. Brian’s question: what actually made that lasting peace possible? His answer: Gideon knew the difference between his occupation and his calling, and he kept his tools sharp in both.

From there Brian ran back through the series’ core categories of confusion (identity, calling, and occupation) and named ways each gets tangled up: identity confused with nationality, sexuality, politics, or past failure; calling confused with causes and cultural battles that pull people out of balance with what God’s actually asked of them; occupation confused with ministry itself, leading either to boredom and emptiness or to workaholism chasing approval that was never really about the job. His larger point wasn’t that any of those things are inherently bad, just that a disproportionate identity built on any one of them eventually cracks.

The landing verse was Ecclesiastes 10:10: a dull axe just means more strength and more sweat for the same result. Brian’s closing charge was pastoral, not just practical, he’d rather risk stepping on toes now than watch people keep swinging a dull axe at a life God actually has a clear design for.

Touch Points

  1. Which of the three (identity, calling, or occupation) do you find yourself confusing most often?
  2. Is there a cause, relationship, or achievement currently carrying more weight in your sense of self than it should?
  3. Where in your life are you “swinging a dull axe”, working harder than you should have to because something needs sharpening first?
  4. Looking back over this whole series, what’s one specific change you want to make to bring your identity, calling, and occupation into alignment?
